History of the Work Itself: One Nation Under CCTV depicts a boy on a ladder using a roller brush to paint the words, “ONE NATION UNDER CCTV,” while a policeman looks on. Banksy brilliantly placed the work just feet away from several conspicuous surveillance cameras. The work was created rather ingeniously. Banksy acquired permission from the Royal Mail to create a mural on a Post Office wall in London, without disclosing the subject of the mural. The artist then built scaffolding over the wall. When the scaffolding came down the Royal Mail and its neighbors were surprised to find the “One Nation Under CCTV” slogan. Given its controversial nature, the work was soon painted over.
"One nation under cctv" is based on...
"Should graffiti be judged on the same level as modern art? Of course not: It's way more important than that."
